Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives Jah-nuary 12, 2019 – Studio Kinda Froggy!

Greetings,

  1. Flu shot – check
  2. Shingles shot – check
  3. Zicam and Vitamin C during the Holiday/plane rides – check

I shouldn’t have gone back to work. That was what laid me low. Second day back. Too busy to get sick so I paid the price Saturday.

Everyone else came from their travels and those of us working with the public are well exposed. After 2 weeks off air seeing family, I didn’t want to miss a show.

Bad radio etiquette to hack and wheeze on air, but I soldiered on. The worst thing about colds for a deejay? Not only the horrible voice croak announcing set lists, but worse: Congestion for me settles between my ears. That makes it rough to cue up the record when I drop the needle.

Very exact skill to place the needle pon the groove, back cue and remote start. Hard to do when deaf

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Digital Dubplate (Stream + Tracklist): Best of 29 Years of Reggae Radio!

Greetings,

July 2, 1988 was when I ‘n’ I debuted at 3AM on a hot summer night late Sunday/early Monday on radio station KRCL. The name of the show was 3 o’clock Roadblock named after the Bob Marley song.

That started a 3 decade journey of 29 years of Reggae Radio. After a year or so I moved from early morning graveyard shift to the big show: Smile Jamaica.

Saturdays 1-4 PM in 1989-1990 and then moved back to 4pm. Planted my flag and never left.

If I figure I average about 45 shows a year (with time away for cratedigging on the weekends). That amounts to 1305 + shows. Almost 4000 hours of Reggae.

I celebrated with all vinyl a couple weeks back. Took last Saturday off and cooked up a CD best of 29 years in my Secret Dubratory.

Thanks for the musical memories!

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: March 11, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist) 3 Hours of Roots Dawtas!

Greetings,

It was Chinese leader Mao Zedong who said Women Hold Up Half the Sky. I was inspired by what I saw during the International Women’s Day celebrations and remembrances.

As many specialty shows I have done over the Years (Mutant Dub, Jah-loween, 4:20, Marley Tributes), I had never done a full on Women’s Reggae Special

I have been doing radio for almost 30 years. No one has really critiqued or analyzed how i program Smile Jamaica in decades. So I can get into ruts like anyone else.

Reggae music is a largely male, Rasta music form. I don’t play much romantic Reggae, which is where quite a bit of female Reggae fixates.

It was probably around Iraq War 2.0, if I remember correctly, I was slinging  Roots and got a phone call from a listener. Woman said to me, “I love Smile Jamaica but you don’t play very much women’s Reggae.”

I took that criticism to heart and ever since I try to juggle at least 1 female tune in my four song sets. And it certainly isn’t tokenism. It’s just methodically harvesting all my Dawtas out of my massive archives of CDs, LPs, 10″ and 12″ and 7″ 45s. Now I can rotate in the best Roots with Quality female artists.

What I call Roots Dawtas or Mutant Dubstresses.

Livicated to all the wives, mothers, dawtas, grandmothers, sisters, nieces, girlfriends and friends.

bless, robt

Greetings,

<Celebrating 28 Years of Reggae Radio-  best of the early years; 28 sec.>

Spring of 1988 my college roommate and I were having pizza at The Pie near the University of Utah campus. They were playing the local community radio station, KRCL over their hi fi.

We heard for a new volunteer call. My roommate was doing modern 80’s indie sounds and I was doing Reggae on the Univ. of Utah’s radio club K-UTE. Even on that low frills setup (they only broadcast in the Student Union) we had some radio experience. How to mix songs, do set breaks, maintain logs etc.

So we went down to KRCL and pitched our shows. KRCL was set for modern indie sounds but they wanted to expand their ethnic music programming. They accepted my application to do a Sunday Night/Monday  AM show I called 3 o’clock Roadblock – after the Bob Marley song on Natty Dread. The show went from 3AM to 6AM.

After about six weeks of training, I debuted either late June or early July 1988. For the nite owls, insomniacs and graveyard workers. Not a lot of listeners but I learned radio. I did that for a year or so (during the coldest winter in 40 years.) I had to call AAA twice that winter.

In Oct. of ’89, I switched to Saturdays on Smile Jamaica. We were on at 1pm back in the 80’s. My bredren Rutaabaga Reese and I together until about summer of 1990 and then I flew solo. And I just keep on keeping on!

So we celebrate that legacy today with 28 years of Roots Reggae and Dubwize!

Selah!

Much love to my Mother, Jeannette

<Livicated to Jeanntte: Happy Mother’s Day Mom!>

Greetings,

Happy Mother’s Day edition of Smile Jamaica. I always start off with a beautiful cover of Tammy Wynette country stylee from Sonya Spence

Tammy Wynette

“No Charge”

My little girl came into the kitchen this evenin’,
While I was fixin’ supper,
And she handed me a piece of paper she’d been writin’ on,
And after wipin’ my hands on my apron,
I read it – and this is what it said:For mowin’ the yard – five dollars,
And for makin’ my own bed this week – one dollar,
And for goin’ to the store – fifty cents,
An’ playin’ with little sister, while you went to the store – twenty-five cents,
Takin’ out the trash – one dollar,
Gettin’ a good report card – five dollars,
And for rakin’ the yard – two dollars,
Total owed – fourteen dollars and seventy-five cents.Well, I looked at her standin’ there expectantly,
And a thousand mem’ries flashed through my mind,
So I picked up the pen, turnin’ the paper over,
This is what I wrote:For the nine months I carried you,
Growin’ inside me – NO CHARGE,
For the nights I’ve sat up with you,
Doctored you, prayed for you – NO CHARGE,
For the toys, food and clothes.
And for wiping your nose, there’s NO CHARGE,
When you add it all up.
The full cost of my love is NO CHARGE.Well, when she finished readin’,
She had great big old tears in her eyes,
And she looked up at me and said,
“Mama, I sure do love you.”
Then she took the pen,
And in great big letters,
She wrote: “PAID IN FULL.”When you add it all up,
The cost of real love is – NO CHARGE
***
Brings a tear to my eye. Spent a week with my folks moving into a new place in Phoenix. Took a day to cratedig and explore Tempe. On my way out, mom gives me a benjamin. “Have a happy cratedig.” Well that’s not exactly her words but more or less. Love that woman.
