<Ma and Pa – Medical MJ weekly? report; 34 sec.>

Greetings,

Quick update on Bob & Rita* Nelson’s medical mj progress from Sun City West, Jah-rizona

  2. Mom toying with the idea of vaping a 1/2 CBD, 1/2 THC oil rather than 4/1 CBD. She’s hit a mental block about becoming a “junkie” but she wants better sleep.

*Jeannette actually

Stay tuned!

Real quick.

Winter. January. Or Jah-nuary. Nuff respect to the skiers. We need the snowpack. But ugh.

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-nuary 13, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist) – The Good Son!

The Healing of the Nation

Greetings,

<Digital story on my parents’ excursion into Medical Marijuana; 1 min. 46 sec.>

As an amateur missionary for the benefits of medical marijuana, I had been relaying the story of my parents’ excursions into Seven Leaf pain relief on the past two episodes of Smile Jamaica.

My parents just became snowbirds from Northern Montana to Sun City West, Arizona

Christmas 2017 in the homeland

My Mom has knee pain, anxiety and sleep issues and my dad: neuropathy, back pain and carpal tunnel issues. Last week I told the story about taking my Dad in to get a Medical MJ card.

<Medical Marijuana for Ma and Pa; 90 sec.>

Took a week to get the card, and I was back in Utah. So they went to the dispensary and had a little shopping spree

  1. pain relief pills
  2. topical CBD ointment
  3. pain patch

Because they bought so much and were first time customers, they got a free vape pen. And bought a 4 to 1; CBD to THC cartridge.

Better than Walgreens or CVS

Long story short: they call me for guidance on how to work the vape pen. Trial and error and voila! My parents are vaping like Bob & Rita Marley.

And hour later I get another call….”We’re not feeling anything.” I said, you got the stuff that doesn’t “feel”.  Oh. Ok.

Last Sunday I call and looks like Mom wants to try a little more kick to her healing regimen. Why not? It’s medicinal and legal.

Last Friday my sister texts me: Mom and Dad just had a toke!

Me: Cheech & Chong!

Sis:

Me:

I had a listener call me after I told this story and we got into a discussion about having parents who are sick of the pills, cost and side effects of the Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex

Once the (recent) stigma of weed is overcome through the relief of daily pain and social anxiety, cannabis reclaims its rightful place in our 10,000 year history of the Seven Leaf plant.

Revelation 22:2King James Version (KJV)

In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

As I concluded my reasoning with the caller on the benefits of cannabis for our parents, he said, “You know Robert? You’re a good son.”

And I said, I really want my parents to enjoy their retirement pain free and unencumbered by the daily pill regimen they are currently under. However, I am definitely taking my vape pen with me on my next visit to Sun City West.

A little dab will do ya!

Bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-nuary 6, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist) Mutant Dub New Year!

Greetings,

Happy 2018! By tradition for the past decade or so, I have devoted the first Smile Jamaica Ark-Ive of the year to Mutant Dub. What I tend to end the shows with in the last half hour, showcased 3 hours of drum and bass glory.

Not everyone is a fan of the “wobble” as much as the Orthodox Roots Reggae “echo.” I can expect at least one listener to call in that it is all too much. (2018 complaint received around 6:15 this year.)

Yet, I was also encouraged by people calling in to say how unexpectedly refreshing it is to hear a classic Massive Attack tune on a Roots Reggae show. (I cast the Reggae net far and wide.) Much love shown to the ON U Sound massive. Creation Rebel, Dry & Heavy, New Age Steppers and Singers & Players. Adrian Sherwood – the Godfather of Mutant Dub

Adrian Sherwood – the Godfather of Mutant Dub

And this year a listener checked in to say that he was unhappy with the flat sound of his Klipsch speakers. (I also fire up Klipsch at the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives.) Until he flipped on Smile Jamaica and the bass woke-up on his Hi-Fi.

<Smile Jamaica brings out the bass in your speaker array; 24 sec.>

After two weeks showing love to my family from Albuquerque to Sun City West, AZ – it felt good to get back on the decks and juggle bassadelica for all who love and loathe the modern sound of downtro, dubstep, lounge, jungle, electronica, post-punk, 420 dubbers, Roots Dawtas and Disco Mix vinyl.

Lo-fi for I ‘n’ I

I took up the show right in the middle of a personal crisis. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, committed enemy to the Seven Leaf, waited until Collie-fornya legalized the collie weed on New Year’s Day 2018 and sicc’d his Justice Department attorneys to stop the people’s will.

I just set my parents up with medical marijuana in Arizona and literally the day after my Pops get his card, Sessions lowered the boom.

Jeff Sessions war on legal/medical weed

My Dad has neuropathy in his feet, sciatica and still has pain from a recent carpal tunnel surgery. Mom’s has knee pain and wants to get off anxiety meds and sleep aids.

Marijuana and its CBD/THC concoctions are the way. 28k die per year of opioid overdose. In the 10k history of mankind and the Seven Leaf, zero fatalities.

So in the first set of Smile Jamaica Mutant Dub New Year I fight back as best I know how. Through music and riddim.

<Medical MJ in Arizona vs. Jeff Sessions; 89 sec.>

States rights for Marijuana just like abortion laws, voting requirements and gun laws. Nuff hypocrisy

Even in conservative Utah, our governor believes that Utah Medical Marijuana is an inevitablity.

And why shouldn’t he? His name is Gary HERBert; 78 sec.

Utah governor and Utah Medical Marijuana

I know I have nuff aches and pains myself to qualify!

bless, Bobbylon

Seven Leaf relief soon come to the Beehive State. Selah!

Words of Wisdom:

Smile Jamaica Digital Dubplate – Roots Reggae New Year 2018!

Greetings,

Happy New Year! 2018. Just got off the road. Two weeks with my family. First week in Albuquerque at my Sister’s place. Cratedigging in 50+ degree weather.

Caught up on some Reggae Revives and picked up reissues from favorite soul/funk labels Now and Then, VamiSoul and Soul Jazz.

Best score were two 60 CD Suitcases. That fetch $80+ on Amazon (when even listed.) Bought mine for $10 each

Ceased making in the era of digital downloads. Now fetch a king’s ransom on Ebay and Amazon

Then drove with my parents due West to Phoenix at their new retirement pad. Beautiful drive from Flagstaff south. 75 degrees all week.

My Dad has neuropathy and is still in pain from recent carpal tunnel surgery. While picking up our dog from the Doggy Hotel and that was right next to the Sun Valley Certification Clinic.

Set up an appointment to fill out a six page questionnaire of his pain history. Wait 2 weeks for his card, so I couldn’t go with him “shopping” for Seven Leaf products. Next year I’m taking my vape pen.

Got in some more cratedigging. Didn’t find much vinyl but picked up some delights at Zia Records.

Zia Records Phoenix

Watched Green Bay sleep walk through a Detroit Lions loss. New Year’s Eve for my Mom’s 75th birthday and flew out at the butt crack of down on New Year’s Day to get back to Utah. Took my first Uber. Cheaper and quicker than a cab ride.

First priority: New roots for Smile Jamaica Ark-Ive listeners. 3 hours of my favorites Roots Reggae delights. Let us enjoy Nuff Roots as our collective New Year’s Resolution

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-cember 9, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist): Inversion Galore!

Salt Lake City. Some call it Inversion. I call it mutant pollution

Greetings,

Brutal. Absolutely brutal. The air in Utah since I got back from Holiday has been beyond atrocious. “Inversion”. Sounds so innocuous. How about death inducing pollution. Killer smog.  Climate change up front and center.

It got me too. I have lived in Salt Lake City since Fall of 1986. The winter pollution gets geometrically worse every year.

I work on the hill at the University of Utah. Driving on my way home (mea culpa!), I can’t believe that orange toxic shit is going into my lungs and a million others. I know several people who have had to go to the emergency room with triggered asthma.

For me, it’s a near bronchial hack and wheeze. (Coughed so hard I thought I broke a rib.) Add to that, my congestion doesn’t settle in my sinuses. But right between my ears.

I am mostly deaf until I clear it out. I was in search committee meetings this week and could not hear the candidates talk.

The Smile Jamaica hearing aid. Found at Bed, Bath and Beyond

And as a deejay that is not ideal either. Tough to find the queue point on the vinyl when I can hear/feel only low end bass.

This takes precision hearing to queue a record

So I was hoping that the heavy bass of Smile Jamaica blasting through KRCL’s monitor speakers would do what Mucinex could not. Blow out my ear tubes.  Acoustic levitation in a Irie meditation?

FAIL!

<Inversion vs. Bass; 27 sec.>

Green smoke nah work neither. FAIL!

<Green smoke vs. lung butter; 20 s ec.>

If you are homebound and can’t venture out into the toxic smog, Smile Jamaica works wonders against cabin fever.

Smog

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-cember 2, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist) Vinyl Cratedig Rinse-out!

Zia Records on West Sahara in Las Vegas. Great source for black wax

Greetings,

2017 was a topsy turvy year for the Smile Jamaica Ark-ives. Massive home remodel was supposed to start Nov. 2016. Alas, weather, Questar natural gas company and Salt Lake City zoning couldn’t agree on when to move my gas line. WHICH WAS UNDER MY HOUSE!

Stones Throw’ record label brags about “my vinyl weighs a ton!” Mine actually did. I had so many records packed into my Record Room that it sunk the floor below the baseboards.

Surprised a racoon or Burmese python didn’t come in through the hole in my floor, sunk below the baseboard!

So the depressing and frustrating delays didn’t even start until March 2017. Seven months of building out an actual physical archive. No more storing boxes of CDs in the bathroom, bedroom, garage and hallway!

Pre-remodel: Bedroom
Pre-Remodel storage shed
Pre-Remodel – Garage

Like any home remodel it was a daily grind of aggravation and interruption to my routine. (If you see me ask me about the bong and the Koran story.)

But once it was done, $25k in over-runs regardless, it has been awesome! New roof, new garage, new AC/furnace/gasline, siding.

I’m no longer that house on the block that looks like a shack with strange smells and jungle drums booming to the street!

Before….
…After

***

From my usual cratedig excusion during Thanksgiving Week to Las Vegas 2016 through Fall 2017,  I had done a moratorium on cratedigging. Didn’t see the point in just stacking up new titles til my Archive was finished.

During any major remodel, you can’t really leave the city in case the workmen need a decision. My house was built in 1901. A half ass renovation conducted in the early 90’s and I bought it in 1995.

So there were a lot of problems that needed construction troubleshooting.

Once I paid my final tab to my contractor: $5,059. Ouch! I was stoked to make up for lost time and hit Vegas with a vengeance.

And as I said on Smile Jamaica last week. Glad to be only a cliche’ and not a criminal in the land of 8 down!

bless, Bobbylon

Words of Wisdom:

Smile Jamaica Ark-ives: Lee “Scratch” Perry at the Black Ark Digital Dubplate!

Greetings,

Spent Thanksgiving Week cratedigging and vaping my way across Las Vegas. Nice to be only a cliche’ and not a criminal in the land of 8 down!

Mesquite, Nevada.

Just like Evanston on a Friday afternoon, 80% of the cars in the parking lot had Utah plates.

Well fortified, I hit Vegas and cratedug the city’s good record shops (Zia is the place in Vegas and Phoenix for good vinyl.) Their several vinyl only shops (Moondog Records, 11th Street Records). Video poker and black jack.

Moondog Records. Helped the owner price out some rare Reggae black wax. Nice to be remembered when I only get there once a year.

Watched Green Bay play awful in a Green Bay bar in North Las Vegas. Red beers (beer + tomato juice at 10am.) Caught Blade Runner 2049 on the big screen.

Good week except my laptop became a craptop. It died on me just as I was trying to upload this Digital Dubplate devoted to Lee “Scratch” Perry and his mythic Black Ark Studios.

Lee “Scratch” Perry chasing the devil away some heavy bass!

From 1974-1979 when he destroyed it, some of spookiest and thickest Reggae was crafted here. Listen for the mooing cow! Everybody of note made their best Reggae albums in that studio: Max Romeo, Junior Murvin, Prince Jazzbo, George Faith. Even Marley’s Punky Reggae Party, recorded in England, had that throbbing Black Ark sound leavened with some shimmering high end.

At high volumes, I guarantee this will chase the mice away and knock the cobwebs off your walls!

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-vember 11, 2017 (Stream+ Tracklist): Acoustic Levitation inna Irie Meditation!

Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek Lebanon. Prior to the Romans, it was a temple to the God Baal

Greetings,

How did they do it?

Every Friday I get together with my bredrins Mike and Aquaboy for bourbon and banter.

If you are regular listener to Smile Jamaica, you are well acquainted with my recent fascination with Ancient Aliens.

The television series on the History Channel goes into the notion that antiquity and all of its massive structures were effected by visiting Aliens we mistook as Sky Gods.

How did they carve out massive stone structures like the Temple of Jupiter in Baalbek, Lebanon (base slab is 1200 tons of a single cut stone?  By my Liberal Arts  math, that’s 2,400,000 pounds!

Or Puma Punku in Bolivia? How did “primitive” peoples haul multiple stone blocks (130 tones – 260,000 pounds) 10,000 feet up the mountain. They stack these massive blocks on top of each other with such precision you can’t get a human hair between the blocks. Who needs mortar?

Puma Punku in Western Bolivia

I’ll tell you how they did it: Acoustic Levitation.

The things that modern construction can’t do today. Lifting that weight with cranes or multiple cranes? Ancient Astronauts achieved these stupendous feats by using sound to move those stones into place.

In the last episode I watched, as a Sound Engineer/Deejay, I was fascinated by how sound equates to energy. It is why the most effective prayer must be recited out loud: in cathedrals, temples, tabernacles and mosques. It is the sound of prayer that produces powerful energy.

I play a song in the second half of this podcast edition called God is Great. The power of Muslim prayer, thousands in synchronicity reciting prayers heard by God. Allahu Akbar – God is Great.

And so…one man’s Skygod is another’s Ancient Alien. I want to think The Watchers plugged in big stacks of speakers and pumped heavy bass to lift those hundreds of thousands of pounds into place.

Imagine a Nubian ancestor of Jah Shaka plugging in and firing off dub shots while the Ancient Astronauts looked on in approval as sound equates energy.

Jah Shaka, co-inventor of Mutant Dub, practicing some acoustic levitation

The Anunnaki – the originators of Mutant Dub?

Acoustic levitation inna Irie meditation. How the Ancients “got high”.
