Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (Stream + Tracklist): May 6, 2017 – Mars or Busted!

We better be here by 2120 – Mars

<Stephen Hawking: To save mankind we have 100 years to Mars; 1 min. 5 sec.>

Greetings,

We are screwed. No Jah Love for I ‘n’ I optimism on this blog post. We need to face facts.

Stephen Hawking: Colonize Mars or humankind perishes

As Smile Jamaica warns during my UFOria sets: We need to quit skylarking and get to the skies.

Mother Earth is finished. It is dead. Not dying. Dead. We killed it. It is a zombie.

Every President has an Oil of the Above energy policy. Industry and government collusion prevented renewables from replacing carbon.

I’m not that much of a tree hugger (more of a leaf burner), but I know it’s over. In 50 years every coastal city will be under water.

Every year living in Utah the air quality gets worse. Even I, with my spongy lung capacity, gets hit by bronchitis frequently.

Soon they will be taxing clean air while the rest of us working stiffs choke. I like my air just my peanut butter: smooth and nah chunky!

My vista in Salt Lake City every January and February. Chunky stylee

I don’t have kids. But if I did I would weep for my nieces and nephews’ great grand kids.

This shouldn’t have happened…

After great promise with the Moon Landing in 1969, we stopped our momentum and put all of our R & D in heinous weapons of mass destruction.

Imagine the trillions on nukes and bombs and jet fighters devoted to Space Travel.

Too bad. So sad. We’re fucked. All we got from Neil Armstrong walking on the moon? Velcro, teflon and Tang.

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (Stream + Tracklist): Jah-pril 29, 2017: Spring Has Sprung!

Greetings,

I love this time of year. Winter and bad air inversions — done. Taxes and Spring Radiothon – done and done. Days are longer, mornings aren’t as dark.

The only downside for I ‘n’ I is the six week Claritin-D fog I have to endure until things dry out.

Rise and shine, wake ‘n’ bake, run the roots!

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: 24th Annual 420 Show (4/22/17): Green Smoke, Black Wax!

Tree House of Horror Stylee – FOX runs the Simpson’s Halloween special after Oct. 31st because of their World Series telecasts: 24 sec.

<Say it with me!>

Greetings,

Some time around 91 or 92 a fellow DJ on KRCL used to do a little segment called 4:20 Funk. Station management told him to stop it. When he told me this, I immediately started doing the 4:20 Cannabis Service Announcements.

In 1993 that led to my first 3 hours Cannabis Service Showcase. Station management was none too pleased and I dared them to challenge me. Smile Jamaica is a cash cow at Radiothon so I knew I had some leverage.

Sometime around 2008 I discovered how to rip audio from CDs to import to Audacity and cut marijuana soundbytes like this:

<Watch out for Johnny Law! 16 sec.>

The cops and sheriff deputies in Fort Benton, MT always had the best dope

For the past ten years my harvest (pun intended) has grown to 107 soundbytes on my Itunes SOUNDBYTES_CANNABIS playlist. Plus I have about 2 dozen I didn’t rip that I found this year.

Whenever I listen to something and a bongrip or herb salutation appears, I play it on Smile Jamaica and then put it on the edit pile for 2018; Jah willing.

The ones I especially love are the 60’s and 70’s anti-marijuana Public Service Announcements (thus my Cannabis Service Announcements).

Let it not be said Smile Jamaica did not give equal time to to the prohibitionists!

<Marty was a good boy til his first joint>

So enjoy this exploration in musical free speech and hope for the day when Pres. Tulsi Gabbard legalizes marijuana in the United States and I can shout to the heavens: 50 D0WN, ZERO TO GO!”

Hawaiian Congresswoman submitted a bill to end federal marijuana criminalization.

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (Stream + Tracklist): Jah-pril 15, 2017: Asteroid Missed….This Time!

Photo of asteroid “near miss”: Apr. 19th, 2017

Greetings,

Spent 4/20 having breakfast with a friend. He said, “You almost sound disappointed that asteroid missed hitting Earth yesterday”.

<Asteroid Attack vs 4/20 Smile Jamaica>

I replied that I just am so cranky about corporate media vs. fake news that when the “Mainstream” Media is telling us that asteroid was gonna miss, my natural skepticism kicked in.

Why should I trust the same bunch who told me Hillary Clinton had a 98.3% chance of winning the Presidency

My friend replied, ‘You need to cut back on your fake news intake. It’s making you paranoid.”

<One’s man’s propaganda is Smile Jamaica’s first option news source>

I scoffed. Never! RT, Al Jazeera, Zero Hedge. Fiya bun New York Times, Washington Post and CNN.

I finished my coffee, paid the check and headed home to celebrate the “near miss” by sifting through the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives for a Vinyl Only 420 special on Apr. 22nd.

Better re-calibrate your aim next time, Aliens!

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (March 18, 2017): From Yodel Reggae to Sumerian Flood stories!

Greetings,

I know it’s spring when I have to go to the pharmacy for that behind the counter Claritin D

Love that extra hour of daylight on Smile Jamaica

I am going through a home remodel and have packed up my records until my room addition is completed. As I pack I pull out gems.

Musical nostalgia. Most of the shops I stocked the Ark-Ives from are long gone. Everything else is pieced out as single items on ebay.

Bim Sherman Century bought for $20 from UK now fetches $1250 on ebay.

When I started collecting Reggae in the mid 80s, people would sell their entire black collection for seed money for these new novelty items: the compact disk. So I scooped up as much Reggae vinyl as Ronald Reagan’s student loan check would allow. Bargain basement price.

I have records I bought for $4 in perfect condition that sell for $400 now in lousy condition.

In 2017 of all ironies: The Compact Disks is going the way of the dodo and vinyl (and vinyl only Record Huts) are coming back.

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: March 11, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist) 3 Hours of Roots Dawtas!

Greetings,

It was Chinese leader Mao Zedong who said Women Hold Up Half the Sky. I was inspired by what I saw during the International Women’s Day celebrations and remembrances.

As many specialty shows I have done over the Years (Mutant Dub, Jah-loween, 4:20, Marley Tributes), I had never done a full on Women’s Reggae Special

I have been doing radio for almost 30 years. No one has really critiqued or analyzed how i program Smile Jamaica in decades. So I can get into ruts like anyone else.

Reggae music is a largely male, Rasta music form. I don’t play much romantic Reggae, which is where quite a bit of female Reggae fixates.

It was probably around Iraq War 2.0, if I remember correctly, I was slinging  Roots and got a phone call from a listener. Woman said to me, “I love Smile Jamaica but you don’t play very much women’s Reggae.”

I took that criticism to heart and ever since I try to juggle at least 1 female tune in my four song sets. And it certainly isn’t tokenism. It’s just methodically harvesting all my Dawtas out of my massive archives of CDs, LPs, 10″ and 12″ and 7″ 45s. Now I can rotate in the best Roots with Quality female artists.

What I call Roots Dawtas or Mutant Dubstresses.

Livicated to all the wives, mothers, dawtas, grandmothers, sisters, nieces, girlfriends and friends.

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (Stream + Tracklist): March 4, 2017: Vinylicious Spring Cleaning!

Greetings,

Winter is when I usually spend the most time in my Ark-Ives. Organizing, sorting, reminiscing about how and where I bought these musical curios.

I had a couple days off and was really in a vinyl listening mood. After 30 years on the shelf, the vinyl still sounds criss  as the Rasta might say (aka crisp).

Doubt any of these are readily found on .mp3 and not many on CD. Gems and obscurities for surety!

Inversion galore. Chunky air inna Salt Lake Gritty

<Smile Jamaica likes his air like his peanut butter: smooth nah chunky>

Greetings,

I think that rodent in Pennsylvania is road kill. Because ever since Ground Hog day happened, the weather has been much better in the Salt Lake Valley.

Praise Jah, I don’t have respiratory issues. But where I work has been devastated this winter. I have had meetings cancelled because colleagues and/or their kids were sick.

I live in the valley and work at the Univ. of Utah up on the hill. Looking down from on high you really see that awful smog that even has me hacking and wheezing.

So last Saturday it was great to bust out of the house around 10am and see something I hadn’t seen in a month: blue skies and clouds. The weather has been almost delightful since.

So let’s enjoy a mild Jah-bruary with Roots Reggae. Fiyah bun the Inversion Galore!

bless, robt
