Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-bruary 17, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist: Every Sat. is Black History Month!

<When every Saturday is Black History Month>

Greetings,

Have time for one quick update. My Pops’ 76th birthday was last Saturday. They are Snowbirds from North Central Montana living in the land of the Sun. Sun City West AZ that is.

Where next to the doggy hotel is a Medical Marijuana Dispensary. I helped my Dad go through the process of getting his medical card.

And for his birthday, as a good son interested in the health of aging parents, I sent him $50 to stock up on the Seven Leaf Relief.

Got Mom convinced to go 3/1 CBD to THC up to half and half. Stay tuned!

Free joint on his birthday? How come the Utah Liquor store doesn’t give me a mini bottle of bourbon on MY birthday

bless, Bobbylon

<Happy birthday Pops! 25 sec.>

Dad’s bounty for his pain. Notice free joint for his birthday

Words of Wisdom:

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-tember 9, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist): Steely Dan’s Reggae Debut!

Cactus Records: Bozeman, MT; my go-to shop from 1983-86

Greetings,

I went to Montana State University in Bozeman from Fall of ’83 to Spring of ’86. I had a studio apartment right around the corner from Cactus Recyords.

I would spend hours there on Saturdays. Buying vinyl. Music magazines like Trouser Press and Spin. (AlreadIy a subscription to Rolling Stone.)  had read in an electronics magazine about these space age inventions called the compact disk.

Aluminum based not vinyl. Harder to scratch or warp. Smaller and lighter so easier to store. For me the best benefit was you could play the whole disk without need to get up and flip the disk over for Side 2.

I wanted these. November ’85 Cactus put up a little rack of these disks. I didn’t even have a CD player yet. So I bought 2 of a very limited stock. The first Fleetwood Mac album (Nicks/Buckingham edition) and Steely Dan a Decade of Hits. I think they each cost $20 which was a fortune in 1985 dollars.

I would stare at them and wait impatiently for Christmas. I had asked for a CD player for the Holiday. Got a Fisher Deck. Mom probably got it from Sears or Montgomery Ward’s.

The deck itself was bare bones. All it did was display track number. No time counter, no programming. I think it had a repeat feature but that was it.

So when Walter Becker, one half of Steely Dan passed away this week, I fetched this disk and livicated the Reggae jam “Babylon Sisters” on this Ark-ive edition of Smile Jamaica

Livicated to Walter Becker; 22 sec.

<Babylon Sisters – turn that jungle music down; 26 sec.>

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: May 20, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist): Good Luck Mr. Gorsky!

Conspiracy Theory UFOria: Neil Armstrong’s first words on the Moon? “I’m so high right now!”

Greetings,

Reggae music is my number one leisure time pursuit. Aliens and Sumerian Cosmology is my next fave obsession.

Surfing around and came across this: the Legend of Neil Armstrong’s true first words on the Moon.

Fake News version: “This is one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind”

Alt-Reality version:  “Good Luck Mr. Gorsky”

Who dat? It’s part of a dirty joke:

Here is my sound clip From this week’s Smile Jamaica. (I bungled the famous Armstrong quote); 55 sec.

Here is Snopes.com’s take

http://www.snopes.com/quotes/mrgorsky.asp

When he was a kid, Neil was playing baseball with his brother in the backyard. His brother hit a fly ball which landed in front of his neighbors’ bedroom window. The neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, he heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, “Oral sex? Oral sex you want? You’ll get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!”

Who ya gonna believe?

bless, robt

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: 24th Annual 420 Show (4/22/17): Green Smoke, Black Wax!

Tree House of Horror Stylee – FOX runs the Simpson’s Halloween special after Oct. 31st because of their World Series telecasts: 24 sec.

<Say it with me!>

Greetings,

Some time around 91 or 92 a fellow DJ on KRCL used to do a little segment called 4:20 Funk. Station management told him to stop it. When he told me this, I immediately started doing the 4:20 Cannabis Service Announcements.

In 1993 that led to my first 3 hours Cannabis Service Showcase. Station management was none too pleased and I dared them to challenge me. Smile Jamaica is a cash cow at Radiothon so I knew I had some leverage.

Sometime around 2008 I discovered how to rip audio from CDs to import to Audacity and cut marijuana soundbytes like this:

<Watch out for Johnny Law! 16 sec.>

The cops and sheriff deputies in Fort Benton, MT always had the best dope

For the past ten years my harvest (pun intended) has grown to 107 soundbytes on my Itunes SOUNDBYTES_CANNABIS playlist. Plus I have about 2 dozen I didn’t rip that I found this year.

Whenever I listen to something and a bongrip or herb salutation appears, I play it on Smile Jamaica and then put it on the edit pile for 2018; Jah willing.

The ones I especially love are the 60’s and 70’s anti-marijuana Public Service Announcements (thus my Cannabis Service Announcements).

Let it not be said Smile Jamaica did not give equal time to to the prohibitionists!

<Marty was a good boy til his first joint>

So enjoy this exploration in musical free speech and hope for the day when Pres. Tulsi Gabbard legalizes marijuana in the United States and I can shout to the heavens: 50 D0WN, ZERO TO GO!”

Hawaiian Congresswoman submitted a bill to end federal marijuana criminalization.

Words of Weeds-dom

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: March 11, 2017 (Stream + Tracklist) 3 Hours of Roots Dawtas!

Greetings,

It was Chinese leader Mao Zedong who said Women Hold Up Half the Sky. I was inspired by what I saw during the International Women’s Day celebrations and remembrances.

As many specialty shows I have done over the Years (Mutant Dub, Jah-loween, 4:20, Marley Tributes), I had never done a full on Women’s Reggae Special

I have been doing radio for almost 30 years. No one has really critiqued or analyzed how i program Smile Jamaica in decades. So I can get into ruts like anyone else.

Reggae music is a largely male, Rasta music form. I don’t play much romantic Reggae, which is where quite a bit of female Reggae fixates.

It was probably around Iraq War 2.0, if I remember correctly, I was slinging  Roots and got a phone call from a listener. Woman said to me, “I love Smile Jamaica but you don’t play very much women’s Reggae.”

I took that criticism to heart and ever since I try to juggle at least 1 female tune in my four song sets. And it certainly isn’t tokenism. It’s just methodically harvesting all my Dawtas out of my massive archives of CDs, LPs, 10″ and 12″ and 7″ 45s. Now I can rotate in the best Roots with Quality female artists.

What I call Roots Dawtas or Mutant Dubstresses.

Livicated to all the wives, mothers, dawtas, grandmothers, sisters, nieces, girlfriends and friends.

bless, robt

Inversion galore. Chunky air inna Salt Lake Gritty

<Smile Jamaica likes his air like his peanut butter: smooth nah chunky>

Greetings,

I think that rodent in Pennsylvania is road kill. Because ever since Ground Hog day happened, the weather has been much better in the Salt Lake Valley.

Praise Jah, I don’t have respiratory issues. But where I work has been devastated this winter. I have had meetings cancelled because colleagues and/or their kids were sick.

I live in the valley and work at the Univ. of Utah up on the hill. Looking down from on high you really see that awful smog that even has me hacking and wheezing.

So last Saturday it was great to bust out of the house around 10am and see something I hadn’t seen in a month: blue skies and clouds. The weather has been almost delightful since.

So let’s enjoy a mild Jah-bruary with Roots Reggae. Fiyah bun the Inversion Galore!

bless, robt
