Before there was a Dubstep, I was calling it Mutant Dub!
Greetings,
Needed a long weekend to begin the giant move into the newly renovated Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives
The Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives – Day 1
Last Saturday: From 7:30 AM to 6 PM. Moved all my LPs, 10″ and 12″ black wax from my detached garage to the Ark-Ive.
Loaded massive Tupperware tubs full of records. Loaded them on a Dolly and pushed them the 50 feet from garage to the back door. Lifted them over the door stop and finessed them into the new room.
Since I had spent all winter and spring sorting 15,000? pieces of black vinyl goodness into proper categories, moving from the tubs to the shelf was easy.
Now if I want to find Mutant Dub, herbtune, Halloween songs by female artists. I know right where to go. Before it was a game of needle in a haystack trying to remember which pile to dig through.
Other than a quick lunch, it was 9 hours of physical, exhausting labor. I was drenched in sweat and sore all over..
But it was worth it. Looks very nice and neat. Unlike the hoarder/collector vibe of massive cardboard boxes filled with stock bought out from long dead record store chains.
CDs are next. So because i don’t like to go a week without new content at Mixcloud’s Smile Jamaica Podcast link: enjoy 3 hours of Mutant Dub not interruptions, just bass in ur face!
I’ll be checking it while I spend 10AM to 3PM Saturday huffing CDs into the Ark-Ive
Vinyl last Saturday. Non-Reggae CDs and DVDs this Saturday – From the garage into the Ark-ives

Spent 4/20 having breakfast with a friend. He said, “You almost sound disappointed that asteroid missed hitting Earth yesterday”.
<Asteroid Attack vs 4/20 Smile Jamaica>
I replied that I just am so cranky about corporate media vs. fake news that when the “Mainstream” Media is telling us that asteroid was gonna miss, my natural skepticism kicked in.
Why should I trust the same bunch who told me Hillary Clinton had a 98.3% chance of winning the Presidency
My friend replied, ‘You need to cut back on your fake news intake. It’s making you paranoid.”
<One’s man’s propaganda is Smile Jamaica’s first option news source>
I scoffed. Never! RT, Al Jazeera, Zero Hedge. Fiya bun New York Times, Washington Post and CNN.
I finished my coffee, paid the check and headed home to celebrate the “near miss” by sifting through the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives for a Vinyl Only 420 special on Apr. 22nd.
Better re-calibrate your aim next time, Aliens!

I knew it was gonna be trouble. Last Saturday we got 6 inches in the Salt Lake Valley. My garage is in the alley way. Dangerous for getting high centered and sliding into power poles.
So I waited for a lull in the storm and moved my car to the front street. My street was unploughed and there was snow accumulated over the curb.
Loaded up my stacks of wax and suitcase of disks. And headed for KRCL.….
Goosed my All Wheel Drive Subaru to plow through virgin snow. Best intentions….. 4 wheels on top of snowpack just skidded me to the curb and I was wedged in a snow drift and dead in the water.
Two hour wait for AAA. First show I had been a no show for in 27+ years.
So after I got towed out and back into my garage, I hunkered down in my Secret Dubratory and pulled together 3 hours of Digital Dubplate sound.
Snowmageddon Stylee!

Greetings,
Hope everyone had a nice Holiday. I spent the first week at my sister’s in Albuquerque. My parents just became Snowbirds, so my second week was in Phoenix.
Phoenix is a great town for vinyl. CDs are becoming irrelevant, but the racks are full of black wax and lots of people doing what I do for 30 years: cratedig. So I will be visting often in the months of Dec-March. Otherwise, vinyl melts from the store to the car!
Found some nice gems to play in 2017. For over a decade now, the first show of the year on Smile Jamaica is devoted to what I call Mutant Dub: Jamaican drum and bass with modern electronic sounds and textures awash in echodelia.
The 3 hour Mutant Dub World Tour!
As Joe Strummer sang, “Knives to the trebel!”
Crank the volume!
Set bass phasers to stun!
Happy New Year. Forward ever, backwards never!

I have been doing Roots Reggae Radio for about 27 years now. Thousands of hours and most of it is devoted to Heavy Roots
<Smile Jamaica – The King’s Music, Jamaican Blues>
Smile Jamaica’s prevailing themes for 25+ Years:
socialism (small s) – Reggae the music of the community. The music of the Underdog. Universality for sure-ty. No isms and schisms!
Rastafari – I am myself not a Rasta but consider myself a Rasta empathizer who acts as a missionary for Jah’s Gospel and let you decide. It’s good enough just to enjoy the inspiration of the lyrics along with the groove of the Beat.
Politrix and politics – I did political interviews for 9 years as The Angry Liberal. Reggae music was talking about what Occupy Wall Street championed 40 years before the Greenspan Recession. Reggae music totally influenced my personal politics of peace and love to all. No war, no racism, no sexism, no exploitation
The one music sub genre I play somewhat sparingly is Lover’s Rock.Romantic Reggae. I will play romantic tunes if it has a hard riddim. But lyrically that’s never been a big motivator.
Every Saturday I bring down about 200 pieces of music. I get to play about 33 per week (Natch!) The gems I pull out of the crate tend to be Orthodox Roots and earsplitting Dubwize.
<At the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: I put the Fun in Roots Fundamentalism>
Not much of this for 25+ years of Smile Jamaica……but a whole lot of this. “Screwface know a who fi frighten”. Bob Marley
Don’t kid yourself. There is plenty of great Lover’s Rock in the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives. I played the best of it for 3 Hours – Lover’s Rock Showcase.

I don’t want no ice cream love, That’s too cold for me, little girl. I don’t want no ice cream love, girl can’t you see?
I want a love that’s warmer than the summer sunshine, I want a love that’s as warm as mine, Because my love, is warmer than a chocolate fudge. Because my love, is warmer than a chocolate fudge.
And that is why, I don’t want no ice cream love, It is too cold for me, girl. I don’t want no ice cream love, it is too cold, can’t you see, little girl? I don’t want no ice cream love, It’s too cold for me.
Love in the winter, Should be warmer than the summer sun.. But if you’re giving me a ice cream love, little girl, that’s no fun, And that is why I say, Because my love, is warmer than a chocolate fudge. I say, my love, is warmer than a chocolate fudge.
No-no-no, ice cream love, too cold for me. No-no-no, ice cream love at all. No-no-no-no.. ice cream love, It’s too cold for me..
Looking back on 28 plus years of seeking and collecting Reggae and Dub has led to 25 plus years of playing that harvest every Saturday afternoon on Smile Jamaica!
Especially now that Vinyl has made a roaring comeback from its decline* during the late 80’s and 90’s. I never gave up on it for one minute. And now that the Digital Music era is in ascendance, Vinyl as “artifact” has never been more important. And that is why I ‘n’ I don’t play Digital. Drop the needle pon de Record!
*Vinyl is the only music source growing in sales. CD’s are in a coma. Even Digital is flat because of the Great Recession.

Happy New Year! Let’s start it off with all dub and bass. Neo-Dub, Modern Dub, Mutant Dub.
Gonna give the Orthodox Roots stalwarts the week off to explore my fascination with the crossover dub sound: drum & bass, electronica, downtro, lounge, dubstep, militant steppers, techno, ambient, etc. etc.
I listen to Roots Reggae at home and Mutant Dub in my car. Knives to the treble!
“Knives to the treble”…Joe Strummer, The Clash
