Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives (Podcast & Playlist): June 30, 2018 – 30 Years of Reggae Radio!

<Help me celebrate 30 years of Reggae Radio; 7 sec.>

Greetings,

After six weeks of Radio training, I ‘n’ I made my radio debut (most likely) July 2, 1988. KRCL 90.9FM was the station. 3 o’clock Roadblock was the show. Hot summer night I cruised down to the station located at 800 S. 200 W. in SLC and dropped the needle pon the record for the very first time.

Well stocked with tunes funded by the Student Loan Program….

<Special thanx to Ronald Wilson Reagan; 39 sec.>

Ronald Wilson Reagan – Rastas called him 666. But he gave me student loan cash to build the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ive

3-6 AM Sunday nights/Morning morning. Named after the Bob Marley tune, but I always led off with a Black Uhuru tune – the group that got me into Reggae. Hook, line and sinker.

<July 88 to Aug 89: 3 o’Clock Roadblock on KRCL; 24 sec.>

3 o’clock Roadblock from July 1988 to Aug. 1989 on KRCL

The first time I guest hosted Smile Jamaica, I was so nervous I couldn’t cue up a record!; 20 sec.

But I got the hang of it and after 30 years, (56% of my entire life). And spinning tunes on Saturdays is my favorite thing on earth to do. 23 sec.

So on today’s Ark-Ive let us celebrate that legacy with 40 tracks that I might have played that first Summer night at 3 in the morning to Night owls, insomniacs and graveyard shifters. Thank you for listening along the way

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: June 23, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist): Poor Immigrants!

<Poor immigrant; 16 secs>

Greetings,

Smile Jamaica is a Roots Reggae radio program. Other than the Mutant Dub I spin in the last half hour, I would venture that 80% plus of what I have played for nearly 30 years comes from around 1970-1985. The Wailers, Burning Spear, Culture and their Rasta co-horts.

Turn off your Wolf Blitzers, Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow and get your news from this guy: Burning Spear

So much great heartical music about peace and love, socialism (small s), the plight of the poor and the 400 year legacy of slavery in Jamaica.

Songs from that era chanting down Babylon. Still have resonance and prophecy today. So when the outrage of immigrant children in cages hit the news cycle, I knew the perfect song to play.

o t Same thing for breakfast: 2014 under Obama’s Presidency

On community radio Deejays are not allowed to espouse political support for any cause, candidate or party. I don’t need to do that. I can let the music do the talking.

Jimmy Riley – Have mercy upon poor immigrants.  When Occupy Wall Street went hot, it was so easy and enjoyable to string a whole 3 hour Ark-ive backing the 99%ers.

Theme song: Peter Tosh – The Day the Dollar Died (1978)

That is why Reggae music from 40 plus years ago still has relevance. The Dreads and Dawtas warned us it would come to this. That is why you should listen to Smile Jamaica and ignore the Fake News Media

1979 Reggae. Fire bun the CIA News Network

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: June 16, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist): Fathers, Daddys and Pops!

Greetings,

And Happy Father’s Day to my Pops in Fort Benton Montana; 50 sec.

My Pops is pretty much the typical Dad. Stoic and serious but prone to the usual tried and true way of American Child Rearing:

<Do as  I say. Not as I do! 17 sec.>

Love the guy.

So I spent last Saturday in the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives harvesting Father’s Day tunes Had enough for 2 and 1/2 hour. (More Mother’s Day for some reason? Considering Jah the Father, that was surprising.)

All time favorite Father’s Day song is one that still brings a tear to my eye. Charlie Ace – Father and Dreadlocks

<Preacher’s son goes to college, returns a Rastaman 76 sec.>

Father and Dread Locks – Charlie Ace (lyrics transcribed by Bobbylon)

  • Hail Daddy-man!
  • Wha’ppen when him come for the Holidays
  • Yes-I! Whap’n rate up a draw of herb fi I place y’know!
  • Son – who dat? No Parson’s son turn Rastaman!
  • Yes-I! Man sight the fullness y’know?
  • Parson send him one son fi (to) college for the study of religious knowledge
  • Some day the boy decides to come home for Holiday
  • But when he enter him home something strange happen
  • He wasn’t wearing slicker suit
  • He wasn’t wearing big heel boots
  • He was wearing dungarees and sandals
  • And when he moved his tam from his head
  • Parson frightened til him was drop down dead
  • When him natty dreadlocks drop to the ground
  • So, his Dad looked at him and said:
  • My son, my son what comes over you? What happened?
  • You pass your GCE and sit upon University. What happened?
  • I work morning, noon and night to get you there. What happened?
  • He said, Daddy you don’t understand like I do
  • But Jah has called upon I
  • I have sight of the Promised Land
  • Daddy, I know the way you feel but one day you will understand
  • My son, what is the plan for the future?
  • He said: Daddy, I plan to use my education to defend human rights, equality and justice throughout the Universe
  • This time the Mother is in the kitchen cooking the best dressed chicken
  • So she run when she realize her one son was home to greet her one son
  • When she sight Natty Dreadlocks she nearly drop down dead
  • She said: My son, my son. What are we going to tell the people of the neighborhood?
  • He said: Mom, tell them that the power of Jah is moving on-ya!

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: June 9, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist): Utah #30?

Utah Medical Marijuana in 2018? Life elevated indeed!

Greetings,

Congratulation to the hard workers who want to add Utah (Utah!?) to the list of states with Medical Marijuana. If successful, Utah would be the 30th state with either Medical or legal status for cannabis.

<Medical MJ in Utah? 59 sec.>

Utah Medical Marijuana on the 2018 ballot

154,000 (including I ‘n’ I) voted for this initiative to make the ballot. It’s about time. Especially in Utah under the crushing weight of opioid deaths and over medication of anti-depressants.

Opioid deaths drop in states where Cannabis is legal

It’s not about kickin’ the bong around. This plant has been with us for 10,000 years of mankind. We have cannabinoid receptors in our brain! The Sumerians called it the Tree of Life.  It wasn’t an apple Eve partook of in the Garden of Eden.

Hey Marduk, don’t bogart that Tree of Life. Puff, puss pass it pon the left hand side!

And for any Blble enthusiasts. It wasn’t an Apple that gave Eve knowledge in the Garden of Eden. It was Cannabis. Unless they used an apple bong

Cannabis not apples in the Garden of Eden

Genesis 3: 2-7

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

****

Fruit of the Tree? Buds off the Cannabis plant. Nothing about apples. Biblical “fake news”

Hey Adam, let’s twist up a spliff. We can eat apples when we get the munchies

All I ‘n’ I can say is:

  1. Get registered to vote
  2. On election day 2018, wake ‘n bake
  3. Get in your car, bike, pony, walk or skank to the polls
  4. Vote yes for cannabis compassion
  5. Don’t let governments, cops nor religions dissuade you
  6. Puff, puff pass this law!

And then there is this!

bless, Bobbylon

Blessings to those who worked hard for this on the ballot come November.

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: May 5, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist): Jah-tucky Derby Stylee!

Congrats to 2018 Kentucky Derby winner Justify

Greetings,

Jamaicans love horse racing too. Every Kentucky Derby Saturday I try to spin a set devoted to Jamaican horse racing. Just as the bugle starts and gates fly, open I drop the bass and go for m own musical horse race.

In Jamaica, their main track is called Caymanas Park. And the jockeys tend to be Chinese-Jamaicans rather than Latin Americans, as in the US.

<Caymanas Park; 39 sec.>

And because this is Reggae, the best song is a track by Bojangles from when the Two Sevens Clashed (’77) on a grooving Culture riddim, he relays the race between these contenders in the Selassie I Cup: 24 sec.

  1. Babylon 2-1
  2. Soul Youth 3-1
  3. Rome – Even
  4. Pope Pius 3-5 (the guy in the Vatican in 1977)
  5. Dreadlocks 8-1
  6. Baldhead 15-1
  • Win! – Dreadlocks
  • Place! – Baldhead
  • Show! – Soul Youth

And here is what happened to Pope Pius….22 sec.

Pope Pius couldn’t finish out in the Selassie I Cup and the ambulance was called — Bojangles, ’77

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-pril 28, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist) – Peace Chalice!

Good thing we smoked the peace chalice. Not another war!

<Korean Peace Talks – Light up the chalice!; 16 sec.>

Greetings,

I graduated High School in 1983. Right as I was getting ready to matriculate at Montana State University in Bozeman, three major events sent me off:

  1. Soviets shot down a Korean airliner
  2. Marine barracks bombing in Beirut killed several hundred Americans
  3. America invaded the tiny island of Granada.
Fall 1983: Ronnie Raygun saving the Granadan people from an invasion of Cuban doctors

Welcome to the Cold War, son. After surviving  the first one, who wants to live through the sequel: Russia/China/Syria Iran vs. US/UK/France/Israel.

China rattling Taiwan. India and Pakistan nose to nose. And Trump came in and immediately gave North Korea the hairy eyeball. So I was very encouraged that the two  Koreas want peace.

Everyday I get to drop the needle pon the record at KRCL instead of a nuclear bomb shelter, it’s a good day.

So enjoy another World War III free edition of Smile Jamaica

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives Mar. 24, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist) – Plant the seeds to harvest the roots!

Greetings,

Winter in our rear view. Time to plant your garden! First pleasant Saturday in March I will lead off a Smile Jamaica with Monty Montgomery and his song Seeds. 13 sec.

For I ‘n’ I, Winter has been a harvest. I have spent my weekends in my Ark-ive sorting out several thousand 7″ 45’s . Pulling titles out for my theme sets: herb, Halloween, Roots Dawtas, Wailers Family Tree, Reggae covers, etc.

I collected baseball cards as a kid. Flipping 45’s took my back to my youth. I am up to letter O for Johnny Osbourne

I give you a serving of 7″‘s in this Ark-Ive edition: Reggae covers of Soul & Rock; 27 sec.

I also feature the second addition to the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives of tens of thousands of pieces: vinyl – LPs, 7″, 10″, 12″; cassettes and CDs.

  1. Peter Tosh – Wanted Dread & Alive (Christmas ’81) – thanks Mom!
  2. Musical Youth – Youths of Today (Spring ’83).

As a youth growing up in North Central Montana. I had to drive from my hometown, Fort Benton (1500 people) to Great Falls. 40 miles away.

I would shop at the local record hut (Eli’s or Budget Tapes & Records). Usually I would buy a piece or two of vinyl: Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Police, Rolling Stones. But I usually also bought a cassette for the hour drive home.

That was how I acquired the smash novelty hit of 1983. A group of ex-pat Jamaican kids living in the UK who turned the Mighty Diamonds herb tune, Pass the Kutchie into a song about going hungry: Pass the Dutchie.

<Musical Youth, #2 in the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives. Before I knew about Smile Jamaica; 84 sec.>

Among all the synth rock and New Wave of the early 80’s, a cute Reggae toasting jam ruled the airwaves.

Alas, in Great Falls now if you want to buy a CD or record your only hope is Wal-Mart or Target.

Ahh, the forlorn memories of a cratedigger who’s world of record shopping is fading away.

Forward ever, backwards never

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: March 17, 2018 (Stream + Tracklist) – False Flag, Fake News or World War III

Wars and rumors of war

Greetings,

<Cold War 2.0 via Reggae Music; 20 sec.>

I’m worried. Truly. The recent poisoning attack of a Russian double agent in Britain has the world ready to send ambassadors home and fire up the war machine.

“Highly probable.” “Overwhelmingly likely” is what I have seen about this issue. I think before it leads to nuclear confrontation, we need to see Vlad’s fingerprints all over the toxin.

We’ve been down this road before: yellowcake, (phantom) weapons of mass destruction, aluminum tubes. I don’t trust the Deep State warmongers on any they say through their Presstitutes pushing war for ratings.

These political cartoons aren’t helping the matter. War is in the air.

<Britain vs. Russia; Saudi Arabia vs. Iran; Turkey vs. United States = World War III; 30 sec.>

So, I do what I always with the only pulpit I have: Reggae music and prophecy about Wars and Rumours of war from the original Cold War.

Oh, and if you think I’m being a nervous nelly. I predicted the whole Facebook scandal as well back in 2008 when I was covering politics for KRCL.

bless, Bobbylon
