Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: May 11, 2019 – Happy Mother’s Day Reggae Special!

Greetings,

Happy Mother’s Day Special from Smile Jamaica. Pulled about 60 Mom love tracks out of the Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives. (Nice that more vinyl choices than cd for a change!). We hear 40 of the best on this podcast.

And I always start with a country-reggae hybrid. Nashville meets Kingston inna rub a dub stylee.

<Sonya Spence – No Charge; 32 sec.>

Tammy Wynette tear jerker. Little boy presents a list of chores he has completed: mowed the lawn, went to the store, babysit baby brother. Total $14.75 (in 1976 dollars; $66.25 in 2019 coinage.)

Here are the lyrics:

My little girl came into the kitchen this evenin’,
While I was fixin’ supper,
And she handed me a piece of paper she’d been writin’ on,
And after wipin’ my hands on my apron,
I read it – and this is what it said:For mowin’ the yard – five dollars,
And for makin’ my own bed this week – one dollar,
And for goin’ to the store – fifty cents,
An’ playin’ with little sister, while you went to the store – twenty-five cents,
Takin’ out the trash – one dollar,
Gettin’ a good report card – five dollars,
And for rakin’ the yard – two dollars,
Total owed – fourteen dollars and seventy-five cents. Well, I looked at her standin’ there expectantly,
And a thousand mem’ries flashed through my mind,
So I picked up the pen, turnin’ the paper over,
This is what I wrote: For the nine months I carried you,
Growin’ inside me – NO CHARGE,
For the nights I’ve sat up with you,
Doctored you, prayed for you – NO CHARGE,
For the toys, food and clothes.
And for wiping your nose, there’s NO CHARGE,
When you add it all up.
The full cost of my love is NO CHARGE.

Well, when she finished readin’,
She had great big old tears in her eyes,
And she looked up at me and said,
“Mama, I sure do love you.”
Then she took the pen,
And in great big letters,
She wrote: “PAID IN FULL.”

When you add it all up,
The cost of real love is – NO CHARGE; 33 sec.

So much love to my Mother, Jeannette, “no charge” taking care of my Dad right now who is up against a rare and debilitating health situation in Arizona. And much love to anyone reading this towards your Mother. Here or looking down from Jah’s Heavenly Abode.

Bless, Bobbylon

Spark up a mint julep. Smile Jamaica celebrates the Kentucky Derby

Jamaicans love horse racing just like Americans do. One way to celebrate that love is through music.

So on behalf of the “Super Bowl” of American racing (to mix metaphors), the  I play my annual Jamaican horse racing set.

I always start with this song….

<The Selassie I Cup>

The horses and their odds of winning:

  • Babylon 2-1
  • Soul Youth 3-1
  • Rome is Even
  • The Pope 3-5
  • Dreadlocks 8-1
  • Baldhead 15-1

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-pril 20, 2019 – 420 on 4/20!

Greetings,

April 20th. 4/20. Smokers in San Rafael code for getting together for a toke. Grew from there to what we know now. The Smoker’s Holiday in 10 down, 40 to go.

Even my Mom sent me a Happy 420 meme

Vaping with my parents last Xmas is one of my fondest memories of the past few years. Especially now that my Dad is deathly ill.

So, every April I start looking for new soundbytes to “rip.” This year I “harvested” about 15 new ones

  • Blues Brothers:
  • Dub Side of the Moon:
  • Queen Elizabeth

And how about some Biblical affirmation of the Seven Leaf….

<Revelation 22:2 – Healing of the Nations; 22 sec.>

<Psalm 18:8 – Fire out of his nostrils; 20 sec.>

from the Holy Land to Egypt and Mesopotamia

As we roll a lickle spliff w/ di papyrus and smoke sensimenia inna Mesopotamia

<Mummy Rock; 11 sec.>

Then back to America for jazz chanteuse Billie Holiday’s Seven Leaf motivation…

<Whenever I get low, I get high…Billie Holiday; 12 sec.>

I wonder if there is anyone out there in terrestrial radio land that did 3 hours of all marijuana music in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. And even if they did, who stitches in 420 soundclips, movie dialog and musical bong rips? (The advantages of being a sound editor by trade.)

I ‘n’ I that’s who! Let’s celebrate some free speech while it is still allowed.

<Sensi…ng a theme?; 13 sec.>

So enjoy the 25th (or so) annual 420 on Smile Jamaica. Until it’s 50 down, none to go….

bless, Bobbylon

The only shotgunning that should be allowed between these two nuclear leaders

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-pril 13, 2019 – Emotional Rescue!

<Emotional Rescue is dub?; 44 sec.>

Greetings,

Having some bourbon over at my buddy Aquaboy’s house. He, I and our friend Mike like combat glaucoma Friday afternoons with some music on the Hi Fi.

My choIice was Rolling Stones – Emotional Rescue. In my elevated condition I’m sitting by the right speaker and noticed the dubby echo of the title track. Mick’s falsetto, Bill Wyman’s bubbling bass and Charlie Watts tapping out a retro Reggae riddim.

Praise Anu! That’s mutant dub! Sounded almost like the Public Image Limited LP Second Edition.  A-tonal echo and meandering pace.

As a drum and bass follower, I always thought Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts are underrated for their syncopation. In my mind, they are the best things on suspect Stones albums like Undercover and Dirty Work. (Before I got into Reggae, living in Montana the Rolling Stones were my most listened to group.)

<Stones drum & bass; 26 sec.>

So listen keenly at around the 2 hour and 30 minute mark on today’s Ark-ive for Mutant Dub Rolling Stones – thus I decree.

Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman September 1981

Also, this show is a prelude to next Saturday’s penultimate 420 blow out on 4/20, April 20th. I harvested 15 new soundbytes, bong rips and movie trailers

10 down, 40 to go!

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Digital Dubplate: Mutant Dub A – Z 2019!

Greetings,

KRCL is a community radio station which means it doesn’t sell advertising but raises funds to operate via a radiothon. We take 2 shows in the Spring and Fall to replenish the coffers.

That means that I have to fund raise for donations after every song. So I put up these Digital Dubplates in lieu of 3 hours of begging for kasheesh.

Last week it was all Roots Reggae. This week the genre I “invented”: Mutant Dub. Contemporary electronic sounds with Jamaican drum & bass and echo.

At max volume it will clean the cobwebs from your speakers!

bless, Bobbylon

Smile Jamaica Digital Dubplate: Spring Roots Cleaning!

Greetings,

Still having no luck with KRCL’s Window’s 95 era machines and lost another recording. (All vinyl, too, dammit!). Having to make space on my laptop and am combining all my various ITunes folders into one.

So I thought what a great way to craft a Digital Dubplate of favorite roots jams. Enjoy!

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Mar. 9, 2019: Lucifer, Ancient Aliens & Smile Jamaica!

Lucifer cast out of Heaven

Greetings,

Sipping bourbon and preventing glaucoma with my bredrins Mike and Aquaboy. Mike was regaling me with a story about his next door neighbor. The Satantist.

The Satanist who loves Smile Jamaica. 38 sec.

So I “dedicated” rather than “liIvicated” Junior Murvin’s classic, Lucifer on air to the Roots loving Son of Satan. With the spooky Lee “Scratch” (Scratch as in the Devil) Perry Black Ark vibe it really fit the mood.

But did you know that  there is an Ancient Aliens connection to Lucifer?

Lucifer and the Planet Venus

Lucifer: Satan’s accomplice or planetary phenomenon

It works like this:

<Lucifer, Venus and Ishtar; 53 sec.>

  1. Lucifer is what the Romans called the Planet Venus
  2. The Romans were influenced by the Sumerians/Assyrians-Babylonians. The Goddess Inanna, commonly known as Ishtar, was affiliated with Venus.
  3.  Ishtar visited the Underworld where she was killed and then resurrected after three days. “Cast out of heaven.”
The Goddess Isthar Descends to the Underworld.

The stories you might hear on a Reggae program. Stay tuned for what comes next!

bless, Bobbylon

Words of Wisdom:

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: March 2, 2019 – Local Crisis vs. World Crisis!

Cheetolini vs. Rocket Man inna rub-a-dub stylee!

<Cheetolini vs. Rocket Man – The World Crisis>

Greetings,

To turn Smile Jamaica radio into the Smile Jamaica podcast, I need to record a digital signal from the soundboard. I take that .mp3 recording and begin my edits and voila. Smile Jamaica Podcasts

On-demand media is where it’s at. But lately I have had meltdowns in the Studio with electrical gremlins or crashed recordings. Grrr.

Luckily, my job as a Sound Editor: I ripped the KRCL stream from their site, ran it through  a file converter and away we go!

LOCAL CRISIS

WORLD CRISIS

So when I spun Al Campbell‘s  massive jam, World Crisis, I couldn’t help think how my petty problems pale to Trump vs. Kim and nuclear weapons.

Like a baby playing with a rattlesnake!

Then in that crummy mood, I played a second version/cover of Bob Marley’s So Much Trouble in the World (Carlene Davis)

You see men sailing on their ego trips
Blast off on their spaceships
Million miles from reality
No care for you, no care for me

Bob Marley not a fan of the United States Space Force

So even if Bob gives the hairy eyeball to the Space Force, I’ve been watching Project Bluebook on the History Channel. Allen J. Hynek and the birth of the UFO “conspiracy”

And speaking of Bob Marley and conspiracies. Alex Jones thinks the CIA killed Bob Marley. (As do I). Uh oh. I hope I don’t start linking to Infowars

bless, Bobbylon

Can’t have musical revolutionaries

Smile Jamaica Ark-Ives: Jah-bruary 23, 2019 – From One Bob to Another!

<Black History Month = Bob Marley Month on Smile Jamaica; 21 sec.>

Greetings,

Indeed for I ‘n’ I and over 30 years, February (or Jah-bruary) is not only Black History Month but Bob Marley Month….Feb. 6, 1945

Therefore, during the last Saturday of February, I clipped out a couple of Bob Marley Stories.

Bob’s not a fan of space travel: 37 sec.

You see men sailing on their ego trips
Blast off on their spaceships
Million miles from reality
No care for you, no care for me
So much trouble in the world

In the mid 90’s, I had a student from Saudi Arabia who worked for me who said that nearly every government building in his home town was tagged with Bob Marley in Arabic. The Wahhabis were none too happy.

<Bob Marley would be Bwb MarLee in Arabic; 39 sec.>
